Life story
1949

Mami Scholastica Ngong Messi (popularly known as Aunty Schola) was born on 8/21/1947 in Kumba, Cameroon. She was the youngest of three daughters: herself, Agatha Funkuin Nji (RIP) and Mary Nayah Nenghabi from the marriage between Nini Cecelia Newu and Bobe Thomas Ngong both of whom were from Njinikom, Kom.

Upon completion of her elementary education from St Theresa primary school (STS) Fiango, Kumba, Cameroon, she was admitted into Queen of the Rosary College (QRC), Okoyong Mamfe, Cameroon. In this prestigious institution of which she was proud to identify with, her family and entrepreneurial mother dispensed all financial obligations and gave her necessary moral support. Her classmates in QRC Okoyong describe her as intelligent, kind, jovial and free-spirited.

Mami Schola was blessed with three sons: Chrysantus, Christian, and Alfred (RIP).  In 1965, Mami Schola met, fell in love and got married to Mr Simon Thomas Tatah, (of blessed memory.)   They were together for over 25 years.

As a businesswoman she ran an off-license fondly known as “Kom Embassy” and a fashion designs boutique that earned her the name ‘Mami Nyanga’ in Kumba.

Besides being a proud mother of three sons, she most importantly enthusiastically fulfilled multiple roles as wife, sister, aunt, grandmother and mother to many more than her biological children. Because of her great admiration for Sasse College, she encouraged all her boys to go to St Joseph’s College Sasse, Buea, Cameroon.

In 1996, in her quest to keep learning, she challenged the Teachers Training Grade 2 exam in Cameroon.  While she was preparing for the oral portion of the exam, she, fortunately, obtained a visa to join her two sons in the USA. She lived with Christian and his wife Rosemary and granddaughter Della for one year. After a brief visit to Cameroon, she returned and went to San Francisco to live with Chrysanthus and his wife Maureen for a decade to help raise her grandchildren: Afou, Dede, and Visie.

In 2008, during a visit for a short stay in Maryland, Mami Schola realized that her grandchildren were all in school. She saw it as an opportunity to reinvent herself and make life her own. She proceeded to obtain her driver's license and went to school to become a Certified Home Health Aide. She worked for 5 years before retiring with full retirement benefits.   An avid Christian, Mami Schola was a member of the Roman Catholic Church and an active member of the Catholic Women’s Association.

Mami Schola loved to be independent. She lived a full life on her own terms, made many friends, and touched many lives positively.  She transitioned peacefully to the bosom of our Lord on Wednesday, July 24th, 2019 to meet her eldest sibling Agatha Funkuin Nji (RIP). She leaves behind her elder sister Nawain Mary Nayah Nenghabi, many children, nieces, nephews, grandkids and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her.

May God Almighty grant her eternal peace in His Paradise where we all hope to meet again and to part no more!
